McKenney & Hall Octavo Indian Portraits

McKenney & Hall Octavo Indian Portraits - Red Jacket

Wanata, Grand Chief of the Sioux

Thomas McKenney, History of the Indian Tribes of North America.

Philadelphia, 1848.

Lithograph with beautiful original hand coloring.

McKenney and Hall's hand colored lithographs remain some of the most beautiful records of Native Americans ever produced in the nineteenth century. These lithographs were created from oil paintings that were done as studio portraits of Indian leaders and members of their parties when they came to Washington D.C. to sign treaties.

Major Stephen Long in 1835 described Wanata in great detail and was most impressed by his splendid dress. One of the most desirable of all the portraits in the series.

$500
