McKenney & Hall Octavo Indian Portraits

McKenney & Hall Octavo Indian Portraits - Neomonni Ioway Chief

Neomonni, an Iowa Chief

Thomas McKenney, History of the Indian Tribes of North America.

Philadelphia, 1848.

Sheet size: 9 by 6 inches. Tiny paper loss to lower right corner and bottom margin.

Lithograph with beautiful original hand coloring.

McKenney and Hall's hand colored lithographs remain some of the most beautiful records of Native Americans ever produced in the nineteenth century. These lithographs were created from oil paintings that were done as studio portraits of Indian leaders and members of their parties when they came to Washington D.C. to sign treaties.

McKenney showed Neomonni his portfolio in progress. When he got to Chonmanicase, He was delighted to say he recognized the famous Chief and had explored the Platte River basin with him. It is thought that Neomonni was one of the Iowa Chiefs who accompanied Catlin to Europe in 1843.
