McKenney & Hall Octavo Indian Portraits

McKenney & Hall Octavo Indian Portraits - Chippeway Widow

A Chippeway Widow

Thomas McKenney, History of the Indian Tribes of North America.

Philadelphia, 1848.

Lithograph with beautiful original hand coloring.

McKenney and Hall's hand colored lithographs remain some of the most beautiful records of Native Americans ever produced in the nineteenth century. These lithographs were created from oil paintings that were done as studio portraits of Indian leaders and members of their parties when they came to Washington D.C. to sign treaties.

A grieving ritual for the Chippeway included carrying a bundle of the deceased belongings during the period of mourning.
