These beautiful views of Western life are the result of Catlin's eight years of work in the field, researching, painting and observing the Plains Indian tribes. Catlin stated in the preface of the work, "the history and customs of such a people, preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life shall prevent me from visiting their country and becoming their historian". Part of the importance of his work was his choice of subject matter, depicting the landscape, wildlife and Native peoples of the west. Catlins work displays a spirit and sense of adventure as well as the authenticity of first hand observation.
