From Lear's first published work limited to just 175 copies. It was the first English ornithological work published in folio format by lithography. Lear began work on this monograph when he was just eighteen years old. He was involved with production throughout each step. He made many of his original sketches from live birds at the Regent's Park Zoological Gardens.
