New York readers of Harper's Weekly literary and news magazine were fascinated by stories of life in the West. Many young artists got their start under contract to Harper's including Frederic Remington and others. The artists would be sent west to produce ink sketches which would be sent back to New York City by train. The ink sketches would be engraved into wooden blocks which could then be incorporated with the letterpress type to print the pages of the magazine. These illustrations then helped shape early concepts of western life.
This is Remington's first published work.
