FROM Graham's Monthly Magazine of Literature and Art..
CONDITION Sheet 10 ½ by 7 ¾ inches. Engraving with modern hand coloring.
These small gems of western American printmaking are from Graham's Monthly Magazine of Literature and Art. Bodmer's original atlas is considered to be the most beautiful book to be published on the American west before the Civil War. The work was so expensive to produce however that distribution was limited to a few hundred sets. The public was hungry for first hand imagery of the American West, portraits of native people, western landscape and wildlife. To satisfy that curiosity Bodmer's images were re-engraved in small format on fine quality wove paper and were inserted into Graham's Magazine permitting them to reach a much larger audience. Graham used at least sixteen of Bodmer's most important portraits and scenes. (p. 62 prints of the West, Ron Tyler.)
