Beslers botanical engravings along with Redoute and Dr. Thornton, represent some of the most important examples of botanical illustration ever produced. This magnificent work was an ecclesiastical commission to record all the plants in the gardens of the Prince Bishop of Eichstatt. Organized with a gardeners eye to bloom time, the plates are ordered according to season. The entire work depicts over 1000 ornamental and exotic plants, many shown for the first time. Important as the first large folio boanical as well as the earliest pictorial record of flowers in a single garden. Wolfgang Kilian, a noted German artist of the period engraved most of the plates.
