Original hand color on wove paper. This composition serves as the formal depiction he made of both his sponsor, Prince Maximilian, and of himself to his subscribers. Bodmer, the tall figure wearing a top hat to the far right carries a satchel with his painting supplies a gun and an axe. Bodmer in the green coat and rounded black hat stands next to him. Rather than an actual historic event, it serves to represent the expedition as a whole. The clash of cultures is neatly shown. $5500. |
