elephant-folio edition of the Birds of America when he began planning
a for a smaller version to be published along with an accompanying text.
The smaller plates were not always an exact reproduction of the much
larger Havell edition. Some of the compositions were changed to suit
the scale of the birds on the smaller sheet. The plate numbers are also
different as the birds were grouped in a more orderly scientific manner
that the elephant-folio Havell edition. |
